Drain Tile Repair in Coquitlam

This ancient system of drain tiles was originally used by both the Babylonians and the Egyptians to remove excess water from the soil. In modern times, it is used in residential areas to ensure that groundwater does not encroach on the basement or crawl space of a house.

Drain tile is an important system that houses in North America still follow. The maintenance of drain tile repair in Coquitlam is one of the responsibilities of the plumber. Although not all types of the home require a drain tile, it is highly recommended to ensure that no strong storm or quick snow melt will get your basement or crawl space inundated with water.

What It Is

Although called a drain tile, it is not exactly made of tiles but of plastic PVC pipe or flexible plastic pipe. It is placed surrounding the outside of a home’s foundation or surrounding the inside of the foundation, and beneath the floor slab. It is supposed to collect water before it reaches the basement or crawl area, directing the water downhill and away from the home, or into a collection pit.

Installing Drain Tile in an Existing Home

Although not required for all types of home, the 2012 International Residential Code requires it except for homes erected on foundation of well-drained soil or a sand-gravel mixture of foundation. Installing a drain tile in an existing home is labor intensive, time consuming, and costly.

There will be much digging and cutting through concrete slabs just to have a drain tile in an existing home. But it may be the only option to prevent bigger problems in the future.

Maintaining the Drain Tile

Problems may arise with your drain tile such as pipes clogged with debris. Dirt and roots could get carried by water into your pipes where it could cause you problems. The following are just some signs of problems with your drain tiles:

  • Water in the basement.
  • Puddles of water close to your house’s foundation.
  • Water stains in your basement wall or flooring.

Water could seep into your basement if your drain tile is not functioning properly. Sometimes, you will see water stains in the basement flooring or walls. The water stains may not alarm you immediately, but it can be followed by serious problems like flooding in your basement.

The water stains mean that there is water that seeping through the concrete, and this does not just warn of flooding but also of eventual serious damage to your concrete basement wall or flooring. The water slowly weakens the concrete that makes up your basement.

Puddles of water close to your house’s foundation may mean that there is not enough slope to make the water move away from your home. This does not necessarily mean a huge problem right away but requires your checking and attention still.

Although it is easy to get overwhelmed with the cost of drain tile repairs, do not attempt to do it yourself unless you are a seriously trained plumber. No need to worry though, there are enough skilled workers for drain tile repair in Coquitlam.
