Common Winter Plumbing Problems

Winter is getting into full swing and we can already begin to feel the bite in the air. Unless you enjoy near-zero temperatures and rough road conditions, you probably aren’t going to be happy about the upcoming months. To make matters worse, your home plumbing system is going to need some TLC to make sure it lasts through the cold months without causing any issues. Aside from a check-up from a local professional in Richmond, there are a few things you can do to make it easier on yourself. Here are some common winter plumbing problems and how you can help prevent them.

Frozen Pipes

Without a doubt the first thing on our list. Although the temperature doesn’t drop below 0 much here, it isn’t unheard of. Frozen pipes are the result of high water pressure and of course 0 or lower temperatures outside. It could be made worse if your system isn’t used to this low dip. We recommend leaving a trickle of water running when you aren’t at home if it is especially cold outside. If you notice very low water pressure, then you could have a problem.

Broken water lines

Since we aren’t used to incredibly cold temperatures here, it can be easy to forget to detach things like garden hoses from your house. If you leave them attached and the water does happen to freeze, then you could easily find yourself with a broken water line. This is because the frozen water leads to a pressure build-up that bursts the line open. Your best bet here is to make sure that all hoses are completely detached and that you use your main water valve to remove water from the pipes.

Hot water heater issues

These are an issue all year round, but are doubled in importance during the cold season here. Since most people rely on this to heat their homes, it is vital that you get it inspected before the cold sets in. You don’t want it to go out when it is the only thing keeping you from freezing.
